This Present Outbreak of Grace
The people of Church of the Cross were scattered on Sunday (Do Something Sunday) throughout the community doing the 'make love visible, and 'be an answer to someone's' prayer' thing.
Bonus! Is what you cry out when your planned goal is exceeded by some other kind of windfall of positive. I heard from some of our scattered pilgrims that Bonus! rang out. Ha-ha. I'm smiling partly because I'm new to the Church of the Cross scene and I am glad to experience the event. I'm also smiling because of the anointing of blessings upon this present outbreak of grace.
Stir it up! (Bob Marley); Fan into flame the Gift! (Apostle Paul) Oh, What a Foretaste! (Fanny Crosby) There are so many ways to frame the story about Do Something Sunday. But I like that notion of Bob-Paul-Fanny, namely: we've only just begun! (there I go again, and thanks Karen C.)
This coming Sunday we celebrate Holy Communion. And friends, this is perfect. We reconvene around The Table where remembering-experiencing-and eager anticipation combine into One Moment. In this present outbreak of grace: love is here, freely available, flowing like a river. Yet, just as with our Outreach Efforts of Do Something Sunday, the Spirit helps our weakness; we don't know all best practices; but the Spirit intercedes for us; in prayer (that sometimes sound like groaning), in outreach (that sometimes is a homerun and sometimes is a swing and a miss!)
The Bonus! That makes me smile the broadest? The present blessings make us hungrier for more faith, deeper prayer, more artful outreach.
1 John 3:2
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
